Mile 1.

This blog is my attempt to write about two big parts of my life, my existence as a stand-up comedian and my life as a runner.  There is humor in referring to myself as a runner.  In 2010 I trained and completed my first marathon at a pace that could be described as ‘slow speed-walking’.   As a working road comic I had to do my 18 weeks of training wherever I could and whenever I could.  If I was playing the ‘Funny Bone in Omaha’, that’s where I ran my miles.   I remember all those runs too.  That 4-miler on that lonely road on the Upper Peninsula where I almost got my killed by a very protective Rottweiler, that 12-miler in East Lansing where I got back to the car, picked up my cell phone and learned of the death of a dear friend, the 10-miler around the twin cities lakes with my pal Robert.  So I decided that these ‘journeys’ should be journalized.    The worlds of running and comedy are filled with characters and stories I like to share.  One of my great friends and favorite running partners is Brad.  Whenever we run together, the miles just whiz by.  He’s always got a good story or new take on shit we both find fascinating.  And his one-liners are classic.  Ask how he’s doing,  “I feel like a million bucks!!  All green and wrinkly!!”.    At the end of my first Marathon I came around the corner and saw the finish line. Two long tenths of a mile away.  And it seemed to get farther away the closer I got to it.  Like that ever-lengthening hallway shot in ‘Poltergeist’.  Everything hurt EVERYWHERE!!!  Then I saw Brad pop out of the crowd.  He had finished the half-marathon earlier.  Now he was running alongside me and with his perfect Brad-delivery said “Would this be a bad time to ask for a piggy-back ride?”  I couldn’t laugh until later.   So this is what I’ll be doing.  There will be videos, pictures from races I ‘run’ in towns I’m performing, plugs for stuff I’m into, and most importantly, tales from the road.  The road I ‘run’.
